Professor Susan Bisom-Rapp has accepted an invitation to become a Faculty Affiliate of the University of California - San Diego's Center for Research on Gender in the Professions.

Launched last year by UCSD sociology professor Dr. Mary Blair-Loy, the Center seeks "to increase the understanding of gender inequality and gender equity in the professions, business, and other demanding careers" by supporting social science research that increases knowledge and fosters efforts by "employers and policy makers to create more equitable and productive workplaces."

Through its efforts, the Center is building an inter-disciplinary community of scholars nationally and internationally. The Center hosts speakers and a working paper series, and in the future plans to organize workshops and conferences.

"I am honored to participate in this exciting project, which seeks not only to advance academic knowledge but to get that information into the hands of those who can make a difference on the ground," said Professor Bisom-Rapp. "The Center is tackling an issue that is near and dear to my heart - the effects of gender on the careers of those in the professions. I have written and thought about the subject, appreciate how complex it is, and am committed to the search for solutions that will facilitate balanced and healthy careers for all my law students, male and female."

"There is a lot to be learned by collaborating with researchers in different disciplines, such as those working in sociology and psychology,” said Professor Bisom-Rapp. “Moreover, the Center's focus on bringing employers and policy-makers into the conversation is a necessary condition for change. "

Susan Bisom-Rapp is an expert on employment discrimination, occupational safety and health, and international and comparative workplace law, who writes and lectures internationally.
