TJSL student volunteers played an important role at the TEDx Del Mar event held at the KPBS studios on Saturday, October 15.
Two TJSL alumni, Mike and Liz Eddy, were the organizers of the event, which brought in distinguished speakers to address finding a cure for some of the most serious diseases faced by society.
“The TJSL volunteers were fantastic,” said Liz Eddy ‘95. “They were willing to help out wherever they were needed. They were the official timekeepers of the event and they stood just offstage and informed speakers just how much time they had remaining on their talks.”
Charles Bisom-Rapp, husband of TJSL professor Susan Bisom-Rapp, was also a volunteer at the event and he reached out to TJSL to help recruit the student volunteers.
TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a non-profit organization with the mission “Ideas Worth Spreading.” It is a series of conferences that attract top-name speakers from around the world, in every major profession and discipline. TEDx events are independently organized and, according to the TED website, “TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission. The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.”
Mike Eddy ’96 holds the license for the TEDx Del Mar event, and this is the second year in a row he and his wife have organized it.
As for the event itself, “It was wonderful,” said Liz Eddy. “It was very informative and it was all we hoped it would be.”
