TJSL Professor Liz Herrera has been honored by Diverse Issues in Higher Education as one of its “Emerging Scholars Class of 2013 - 12, rising academic stars who have emerged as leaders in their respective disciplines who shine in and out of the classroom.”

Not only was Professor Herrera one of the professors selected, but she was featured on the cover of the magazine!

The Stanford University and Harvard Law School graduate was singled out for her “twin mission as a law professor and community lawyer…access to justice and entrepreneurialism.”

Diverse calls Professor Herrera a “national leader on extending ‘low-bono’ legal services to working class people who cannot afford to pay customary rates and don’t qualify for legal aid because they earn too much.”

“I am honored by this acknowledgement of my efforts and TJSL’s commitment to hire a faculty that reflects the needs of its student body,” said Professor Herrera of the award.

Professor Herrera, who has been on the TJSL faculty since 2008, is the founder of the law school’s Small Business Law Center, which puts into practice her passions of providing legal services for the under-served populations, while helping promote their entrepreneurial dreams. She is also responsible for the development of TJSL's Center for Solo Practitioners, a lawyer incubator program.

Before arriving at TJSL, Professor Herrera had solo a practice in Compton, California and is also the co-founder and board president of Community Lawyers, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides low and moderate-income people access to affordable legal services and develops innovative opportunities for attorneys and law students in underserved communities.

Congratulations to Professor Herrera from the TJSL Family!
