San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association awarded its fourth annual Bar Stipend Scholarships on Thursday, May 22 at Fred’s Café in Old Town. SDLRLA presented seven Bar Stipend Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 aimed at providing financial support to inspirational graduates sitting for the Bar in July 2014, or February 2015.
“The award was granted to applicants who have shown both scholastic achievement and commitment to the Latino community,” explained recipient Monique R. Rodriguez.
Along with Rodriguez, TJSL grads Veronica Carrillo and Javier Vargas were also bestowed Bar Stipend Scholarships to assist in their preparation.
In particular, Javier Vargas was honored with the Jose and Laura Castillo Bar Stipend Award. Appellate Attorney with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Laura Castillo, and Assistant U.S. Attorney, Jose Castillo, sponsored Vargas because of his demonstrated promise and interest in the field of prosecution. “To have such established and respected prosecutors supporting my career goals feels incredible,” Vargas said. “I hope to one day follow Jose and Laura Castillo's example and give back to my community the way they have given to me,” he added gratefully.
“Awards such as these are extremely helpful to bar candidates, such as myself, who do not have the financial resources to support themselves through the bar process. I am extremely grateful for this award,” said Monique Rodriguez, who will sit for the Bar this July. “I really appreciate the Association for recognizing and supporting law students who make time to give back to the community despite the demands of school and other commitments,” Veronica Carrillo commented.
In addition to the Bar Stipend Scholarship, SDLRLA also generously awards a broader scholarship each October at their Annual Awards and Gala Dinner.
